Dysregulation in diabetes
In diabetes the body doesnt react to insulin very well and so you get hyperglucaemic episodes and hypoglycaemic episodes.
Hypoglycaemia is where there is low amounts of sugar in the blood and hyperglycaemia is when there is high levels of sugar in the blood.
Effects of hypoglycaemia
The effects of hypoglycaemia are much more immediate compared to hyper, as it means there is not enough fuel in the blood for the brain and RBCs to run well.
The threshold for this is <4mmol/L-1 and symptoms can include increased HR, sweating, trembling, weakness and hunger. As it worsens it can lead to neuroglycopaenia, and confusion tiredness lack of coordination, weakness, drowsiness and seizure and coma.
